Meg Takes Chicago

11. Chicago Park District Golf

To be clear, I am not a seasoned golfer.. I bought my first set of clubs this past summer and have yet to play a full nine holes. But I do love the game, especially the adorable outfits and the snack cart, obviously 🙂

My boyfriend Jon, however, is an amazing golfer and often doubles as my coach.. Bless his heart, as I can get a bit cranky on the course from time to time (again, until the snack cart rolls around that is).

Well, come June both of us will be relocating to Chicago and I cannot wait to take on a new course, I think.. Driving range at least. Lucky for me, Chicago Park District Golf includes a variety of courses, a driving range, putt putt, a learning course, a golf academy, and lessons all in the heart of the city!

Looks like it’s time for me to update my wardrobe!

8. Soldier Field

But don’t tell anyone! Or at least don’t tell my fellow Cheese Heads 🙂

Soldier Field- home to the Chicago Bears- was renovated in 2003 for multi-purpose event use, but as #8 on my list it will be visited as the former, the home to the Bears.. And now you know why you have to keep it a secret.. So shhh!

My love of Wisconsin extends far beyond my unquenchable thirst for cheese, and so, to bring myself to attend a Bears game (a game not against the Packers, that is) in Chicago will take plenty of courage..

And so a great source of motivation: snacks, of course! More than half of my motivation to attend sporting events (other than my cute date, that is :)) arises from the variety of snacks in one location: beer, nachos, hot dogs!, cheese fries, pickles, hot cocoa and more! A cute date and great snacks.. What more could a girl want?!

So this season, hopefully before below zero temperatures encroach on the Windy City, I will attend a Bears game (and not against the Packers) at Solider Field.

Wish me luck that the smell of cheese and brats doesn’t give me away as a Cheese Head!

6. Lou Malnati’s

Although I prefer thin crust…

For my first Chicago-style pizza experience, I’ve decided on Lou Malnati’s if not simply for its claim to be the home of the BEST Chicago-style deep dish pizza in the world…

“If you love a buttery, flakey crust, sweet and tangy tomatoes, gooey mozzarella cheese, perfectly seasoned sausage, and other fresh ingredients- you’ve come to the right place.  We pride ourselves on making each handmade pizza just the way you like it.”

Chicago-style deep dish pizza: heartiest style, knife and fork, dough –> cheese –> toppings –> sauce

Family-owned and operated- following a long and rich history- Lou’s is celebrating its 39th anniversary this year so it’s sure to be a treat! And even better news, I’ve already secured my date– who also prefers thin crust.. Sure to be an adventure for the both of us!

Because I know very little about baseball– most often sports in general– other than that the snacks are PHENOMENAL, I turn to YouTube for help in describing what’s to potentially come at Wrigley Field this season.

2. Ed Debevic’s

On my last visit to Chicago as I was driving to my hotel, everyone in the car started raving when we passed Ed Debevic’s.. “Ugh, we haaave to go to Ed Debevic’s while we’re here,” “I’ve been there!” “Me too!” “Who hasn’t been to Ed Debevic’s?” And that’s when I realized, I have never been to the famous Ed Debevic’s. Devastating. And so number two on the must see list: Ed Debevic’s.

While I do not know a whole lot about the famous burger joint, I do know that like a scene from Happy Days, the 50s style Ed Debevic’s features delicious diner food, from shakes to burgers. Beyond that, the staff are outrageously entertaining, rudeness being the most interesting facet of their character.

On top of everything, the mouthwatering menu is enough to tempt anyone: Chili, burgers, wieners, salads, sandwiches, fries, rings, one of the most amazing dessert lists I’ve ever seen, and “fountain creations” to name a few.

And now, I’m ready to book a plane ticket to Chicago and enter a food coma soon after arriving.
