Another adventure at the Art Institute of Chicago.. Too bad I won’t be settled in Chicago in time, sounds amazing!

The SAIC NightWalk 2010

“The Art Institute is one of my favorite places in Chicago, especially since the opening of the Modern Wing. When I heard a new fashion benefit, NightWalk 2010, will be held this Friday in the museum’s magnificent new addition, I knew it was an event not to be missed. When I heard a new fashion benefit, NightWalk 2010, will be held this Friday in the museum’s magnificent new addition, I knew it was an event not to be missed. This late-night (9pm-12am) fashion party culminates the day-long School of the Art Institute of Chicago fashion celebration that starts that same day, with a 2pm fashion show (which quickly sold out) and a 7pm annual gala scholarship benefit, The Walk 2010.”

“NightWalk 2010 presents the top designs from the SAIC runway show as well as 10 new runway designs by Gary Graham, a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, 1992 SAIC graduate, and the evening’s Legend of Fashion honoree. The event begins with hors d’oeuvres and an open bar before guests make their way to a standing-room-only “Best of Show” runway presentation of cutting-edge designs by SAIC sophomores, juniors and seniors. Desserts and coffee cap off the evening. Tickets are $100 and support SAIC student scholarships. Come out and support local fashion and design education at a dynamic event featuring breathtaking designs and impressive designers.” — By Meghan Turner

1. Chicago Museum of Science and Industry – Smart Home: Green + Wired

Before my first exploration of one of Chicago’s must sees, I’d like to remind readers why exactly I’m cataloging these attractions:

Well first of all, when I moved to Boston for college everyone told me something I must do or somewhere I must visit; unfortunately, school got in the way (or I failed to take advantage) and I missed out on much of what the city and surrounding areas have to offer. This time around, I will not make the same mistake.

And second, to have some fun (pre)exploring what the Windy City has to offer!

My first must see is the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, specifically its Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit. I visited the museum once this past January but unfortunately the exhibit I most wanted to explore– the Smart Home– was sold out! (Warning, you have to buy tickets to the exhibit and they sell out fast. Tours take place until 1:40 or later on certain dates.) So, when I move to Chicago in June the Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit is certainly at the top of my to do list.

Architecture – Chicago’s Greenest Home’s architect, Michelle Kaufmann, specializes in sustainable lifestyle design including single-family homes, eco-luxury resorts and multi-family communities.

Smart Technology – Its “digital nerve center” operates continuously in order to save time and lessen energy consumption.

Inside and out – The Smart Home features a sustainable veggie garden, rain barrels for green watering, and composters.

I’d like to say I live a green life (or at least I try!) but of course there’s more I can do in the sustainability department. I’m hoping my trip to the Smart Home will teach me more about what I can do to help and (re)inspire me to do more 🙂

Here’s to green living and a happy, safe and green St. Patrick’s Day!
